Chakra Chants

Introduction to Chakras

The concept of chakras originates from ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly from within Hinduism and later incorporated into other belief systems like Buddhism and Jainism. While the exact origins of the chakra system are difficult to pinpoint, it is believed to have emerged within the broader context of Indian spiritual philosophy and yogic practices. Here’s an overview of the history and development of the chakra system:

  1. Ancient Texts: The earliest references to chakras can be found in ancient Indian texts, including the Vedas, Upanishads, and Tantras. These texts contain descriptions of subtle energy channels (nadis) and centres (chakras) within the human body, along with practices for awakening and harmonizing these energies.
  2. Tantric Tradition: The chakra system became more prominent within the Tantric traditions of Hinduism and later Buddhism. Tantra, a spiritual and philosophical tradition that emerged around the 6th century CE, placed significant emphasis on the awakening of spiritual energies (kundalini) and the activation of chakras as a means to spiritual liberation and enlightenment.
  3. Hatha Yoga: The chakra system became integrated into Hatha Yoga practices, a branch of yoga that emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and energy manipulation. Hatha Yoga texts, such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita, describe techniques for stimulating and balancing the chakras to promote physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual growth.
  4. Incorporation into Buddhism and Jainism: As Tantric practices spread, the concept of chakras was adopted and adapted within Buddhist and Jain traditions. In Tibetan Buddhism, for example, the subtle body system includes chakras along with channels (nadis) and vital energies (pranas). Similarly, Jainism incorporates concepts of chakras and subtle energy into its spiritual practices.
  5. Modern Interpretations: In the modern era, the chakra system has been popularized and adapted within New Age spirituality, alternative healing practices, and holistic wellness approaches. Various interpretations and systems of chakras exist, influenced by both traditional teachings and contemporary perspectives.

Throughout its history, the concept of chakras has evolved and been interpreted in diverse ways by different spiritual traditions and practitioners. Today, the chakra system continues to be a subject of study, practice, and exploration within various spiritual and holistic wellness communities around the world.

The word “chakra” comes from the Sanskrit language, meaning “wheel” or “disk.” Chakras are often depicted as spinning energy centres within the subtle body, which is believed to be an energetic counterpart to the physical body.

In energy healing, Chakras are normally described in an upward direction moving from the Earth, upwards, through the body, toward the infinite Universe.  They are typically associated with colours.  The colours are aligned with Sir Isaac Newton’s presentation of the rainbow effect created by the prismatic fragmentation of white light.

Seventh Chakra

  • Name: Crown Chakra
  • Typically associated Colour: Violet

Fifth Chakra

  • Name: Throat Chakra
  • Typically associated colour: Cyan
  • Location: Throat

Fourth Chakra

  • Name: Heart Chakra
  • Typically associated colour: Green
  • Location: The middle of your chest

Third Chakra

  • Name: Solar Plexus Chakra
  • Typically Associated colour: Yellow
  • Location; stomach area (Upper abdomen)

Second Chakra

  • Name: Sacra Plexus Chakra
  • Typically Associated colour: Orange
  • Location: Lower abdomen; beneath the navel

First chakra

  • Name: The Root Chakra
  • Typically Associated Colour: Red
  • Location: Tail bone (spine base)
Energy is typically represented as coming from the Earth and moving upwards through the subtle body,  so although our tendency in the West is to read from the top down, the Chakras are numbered from the bottom up. This is why the description of the chakras reads from the top down, starting with Chakra seven.

Some practices believe the Energy flows in the opposite direction, that is, coming in, from the universe and the Divine one spirit, at the crown and down, through our subtle body, to the Earth where it, and we, are grounded.

Sound Therapy

When embarking on a sound therapy journey, it’s essential to understand the concept of sound frequencies. The frequencies produced by vibrating musical instruments and the frequencies of the body and the natural world are rarely aligned.

However, tuning the Chromatic scales of frequencies is critical to achieving the most beneficial therapeutic effects.

This is especially true in practices using singing bowls, gongs or chimes for chakra alignment, chakra clearing and deep restorative meditation.

Interestingly, Sir Isaac Newton linked the colours of the prismatic fragmentation of white light with the standard chromatic musical scale of CDEFGAB.

The science (and math) of sound

Musical Scales are based upon a reference point.  In the West, there are typically two Chromatic scales, each with its own reference point.

In Orchestral Tuning, we use a chromatic scale based on 440Hz.  In the complementary and holistic practices arena, the belief is that a chromatic scale based on 432Hz is a more harmonious and natural frequency.

Both chromatic scales have a similar tuning standard, with the note A above middle C tuned to vibrate at the reference frequency. This frequency serves as the reference pitch for tuning musical instruments and establishing the pitches of other notes in the chromatic scale.  In each chromatic scale, there are 12 equally spaced notes (A#/Bb, B, C, C#/Db, D, D#,Eb, E, F, F#,Gb, G, G#/Ab, and A) within the octave, including all the natural and sharp/flat notes. Each successive note is exactly one semitone (or half step) higher in pitch than the previous note.

There is a mathematical calculation for this which states that the frequency ratio between successive notes in a Chromatic Scale is calculated using the 12th root of 2.  Simply this equates to multiplying the frequency of each not by 1.059463 to find the frequency of the next note in the scale.

Solfeggio frequencies are a set of musical tones that are said to have specific spiritual or healing properties according to some alternative medicine practitioners, new age proponents, and esotericists. The idea of solfeggio frequencies is based on the ancient six-tone scale used in Gregorian chants. These frequencies are often claimed to have various effects on the body and mind, such as promoting relaxation, meditation, or even healing of physical ailments.

The purported Solfeggio frequencies are often listed as:

1. 396 Hz – Liberating Guilt and Fear
2. 417 Hz – Undoing Situations and Facilitating Change
3. 528 Hz – Transformation and Miracles (DNA Repair)
4. 639 Hz – Connecting/Relationships
5. 741 Hz – Expression/Solutions
6. 852 Hz – Returning to Spiritual Order

Having gained insight into the Solfeggio frequencies, we can then take a quick glimpse at the Chakras.  For simplicity, I’ll be introducing the 7-Chakra model here.

Originally, there are 6 Solfeggio Frequencies. Let’s quickly discuss them individually and their associated chakras.

6 SOLFEGGIO FREQUENCIES

Root Chakra, 396 Hz Frequency

This is a low and smooth solfeggio frequency believed to help rid trauma, fear, and guilt.

This frequency primarily links to the root chakra.

Sacral Chakra, 417 Hz Frequency

This activates creativity and positive change. The 417 Hz frequency is thought to alleviate tension and stress, allowing you to free up tight joints and muscles and, in turn, increase physical mobility.

This frequency is most associated with the sacral chakra.

Solar Chakra, 528 Hz Frequency

This frequency is responsible for miracles and dramatic changes in people. Tones in this frequency help pain and anxiety relief, weight loss, and rewiring of your brain’s neural pathways. The 528 Hz frequency is associated with the solar chakra.

Heart Chakra, 639 Hz Frequency

This frequency activates healing and love.  It’s in-depth, profound, and associated with vulnerability and intimacy. The 639 Hz frequency creates the foundation for interpersonal connections and healthy relationships – little wonder it connects to the heart chakra.

Throat Chakra, 741 Hz Frequency

This frequency promotes speaking the truth and empowerment. Sounds in this frequency encourage idea generation, creative thinking, clear speaking, and self-confidence.

This frequency influences the throat chakra.

Third-eye Chakra, 852 Hz Frequency

This frequency triggers a higher realm of spiritual thinking. It walks you out of illusions, introducing you to reality and the true elements of your environment.

852 Hz links you to astral projections and deep dreams, bringing you closer to your true self.

This frequency resonates with the third-eye chakra.

Three Additional Solfeggio Frequencies

While the 6 frequencies have been well known over the years, lately, some deeper research found an additional three solfeggio frequencies, namely, 174 Hz, 285 Hz, and 963 Hz

Let’s go over them quickly…

174 Hz Solfeggio Frequency

174Hz frequency, considered the lowest of them all, serves as a powerful anaesthesia.

This frequency is ideal for alleviating pain in your physical body. It triggers slow and mildly soothing features, which encourage the feeling of safety, security, and firm convictions.

285 Hz Solfeggio Frequency

This frequency targets the energy house by freeing up blockages and addressing holes in your aura and, as well, opens up your chakra system.

For energy healers, this frequency is a common preference.

936 Hz Solfeggio Frequency

The 936 Hz Solfeggio Frequency is the highest of all the tones. It is said to connect you to the universe and its perfection. This allows us to flow with the single force upon which the now and future is founded. This frequency inspires our crown chakra.
